Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Caribou ME
953 AM EDT Wed Aug 13 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front approaches from the northwest today, then crosses
the area through Thursday. High pressure then builds down from
Quebec behind the front through Friday. High pressure will shift
overhead Saturday as a cold front approaches from the northwest.
The cold front will swing through Maine on Sunday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
0930 Update...Heat appears on track today, with heat advisories
reaching around 95-96 for all but coastal Downeast and northern
portions of the Central Highlands/southwest portions of the
North Woods. Based on latest radar trends and high resolution
models, did slow down by about an hour the onset of
showers/thunderstorms. 12z sounding shows under 20kt of bulk
shear, so risk of strong to severe storms is not great - however
threat for locally heavy rainfall remains. Otherwise, only
minor changes were made with this update to reflect the latest
trends in observations and guidance, with all other aspects of
the forecast appearing to be on track.
Prev Discussion...
Another hot and humid day today but relief is on the way
Thursday as a cold front crosses the region. Upper ridge
continues to break down today in advance of an upper trough and
surface cold front from Quebec. Although it will not be quite as
warm as the past couple of days, high temperatures this
afternoon are still expected to climb well into the upper 80s to
lower 90s away from the coast. Apparent temperatures are still
expected to climb into the mid 90s in many inland locations,
thus the heat advisory continues into this evening. As the cold
front approaches, scattered showers and thunderstorms are
possible late this afternoon, mainly across the north Maine
Woods and far northern areas. The main threat with any storms
that develop will be the potential for locally heavy rainfall,
as precipitable water values will generally range from 1.75 to
2.0 in the moist air mass ahead of the front.
Scatterd showers will continue into this evening across
northern areas. Despite the loss of diurnal heating, some
elevated instabilty will result in a continued chance for a few
thunderstorms continuing into this evening, mainly to the north
of the Katahdin region. As mentioned above, the high
precipitable water values in advance of the front and deep warm
cloud layer will result in the possibility of locally heavy
rainfall. Fortunately, in light of our prolonged dry spell, the
one and three hourly flash flood guidance is running on the
higher side, around 2 inches. The moist southerly flow ahead of
the front is expected to result in areas of stratus and fog
developing tonight, especially for the coast. Another rather
muggy night is also expected, with overnight lows expected to
range from the lower to mid 60s across much of the region.
The cold front will continue to slowly cross northern and
central portions of the region later tonight and then southern
areas during Thursday. Cooler and drier air will begin to flow
into northern portions of the region late tonight and early
Thursday morning in the wake of the front. Expect a continued
chance for showers across northern areas early Thursday,
followed by much drier and cooler conditions by afternoon. The
front will continue to cross central and Downeast portions of
the area through Thursday afternoon, with a continued chance
for showers and thunderstorms as the front crosses the region.
Afternoon highs on Thursday will be several degrees cooler than
the past few days. Expect highs across the far north to range
from the mid to upper 70s and lower to mid 80s for the Bangor
region and Downeast areas.
&&
.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Cold front moves offshore Thursday evening and any
showers/storms Downeast come to an end. Decreasing clouds and
cooler, drier air works in from NW to SE through Thursday night.
Then Friday into Friday night will continue to feature mostly
clear skies with light winds and dry/milder air. Friday night
looks to be the coolest night with high pressure overhead, with
lows in the low to mid 40s north and low 50s Downeast. Friday`s
high temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s north and around
80 Downeast, but with much lower dewpoints, even the
temperatures around 80 Downeast will feel pretty comfortable.
Models are in good agreement.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pressure moves east of the area Saturday, and Saturday looks
a bit warmer for most places, with generally low to mid 80s.
Dewpoints still fairly low on Saturday, but will be creeping up
to around 60 Sunday morning ahead of an approaching cold front.
This front brings a shot at some showers and storms during the
day Sunday as it races from NW to SE through the area. Going for
PoPs 40 to 70 percent, with the highest chances in the north.
Some uncertainty with the timing of the cold front, so things
could change. Also a fair amount of uncertainty on the amount of
instability ahead of the cold front. Some places will likely
get storms, but too early to tell if these storms will be
severe. Some uncertainty with high temperatures Sunday depending
on cold front timing, but areas ahead of/south of the cold
front should get into the mid 80s.
Cooler, drier airmass moves in Sunday night, with likely below
average temperatures and dry weather Sunday night through
Tuesday night. Some uncertainty in temperatures, but best bet is
for high temperatures roughly in the upper 60s to mid 70s, and
lows in the 40s to low 50s. Toward Monday night and Tuesday
night, there`s even a small chance (about 20 percent) of patchy
frost in some of the cooler valleys in the north. Although the
most likely scenario for Monday/Tuesday is dry weather, there is
a minority of models (about 10 percent) that do bring some
rainfall.
